FIFA's Grotesque Proposal: Israel v Palestine Match as Youth Tournament Opening Game, While Palestinians Bury Their Athletes

FIFA proposes Israel-Palestine youth match as opening game while Palestinians mourn 1,007 dead athletes, destroyed stadiums, and systematic targeting.

FIFA's Grotesque Proposal: Israel v Palestine Match as Youth Tournament Opening Game, While Palestinians Bury Their Athletes

FIFA has proposed one of the most breathtakingly insensitive gestures in modern sports: an Israel versus Palestine under-15 football match as the opening game of a new youth tournament scheduled for September in the United States. The proposal comes as Palestinian officials, athletes, and families are still counting the dead from what the International Court of Justice is examining as potential genocide, and while Israeli occupation forces maintain their stranglehold on Palestinian sports infrastructure and the Palestinian body itself.

The tournament, open to all 211 FIFA member associations, would stage this “symbolic” match in what FIFA President Gianni Infantino frames as a gesture toward peace. It is, instead, a study in the moral bankruptcy of sport's governing bodies when confronted with systematic destruction.

Since October 2023, Israeli forces have killed 1,007 members of Gaza's sports community, according to a comprehensive report released by the Palestinian Football Association in March 2026. Of those, 565 were football players. The same figure can be cross-checked against reports from other Palestinian sports bodies: 785 Palestinian athletes and sports officials have been killed in Gaza and the occupied West Bank since October 2023, with 437 of those deaths being football players. An additional 988 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli occupation forces and settlers over the same period.

A still from video footage shows Palestinian women and men blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs, sitting on the grass in front of a soccer goal at Al‑Yarmouk Stadium in Gaza City (December 2023)

The destruction is absolute. Israeli occupation forces have demolished or partially destroyed 265 sports facilities across Gaza, including stadiums, gyms, and club buildings. All five of Gaza's major football stadiums have been obliterated: Palestine Stadium, Al-Yarmouk Stadium, Mohammed Al-Durrah Stadium, Beit Hanoun Stadium, and Al-Tuffah Stadium, along with dozens of smaller facilities. The Palestinian Football Association's building in Gaza was itself hit by Israeli warplanes. What remains of the Palestine Stadium now serves primarily as a refuge for amputee footballers from Gaza Al-Irada, a club composed of players who have lost limbs.

Al-Yarmouk Stadium, once one of Gaza's most beloved and historic sports venues, was converted by Israeli occupation forces into a mass detention center where Palestinian civilians were tortured and held without due process. The stadium, which hosted thousands of matches and held generations of Palestinian sporting memories, became a tool of state violence.

The targeting of Palestinian athletes appears deliberate and systematic. Israeli occupation forces have long treated Palestinian sports as a threat. During the Great March of Return protests in 2018, Israeli snipers were explicitly ordered to target the legs of unarmed Palestinian demonstrators. In interviews conducted by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, snipers boasted of their precision, with one saying he could identify exactly how many kneecaps he had hit. Over 7,000 of the 8,000 live-fire casualties sustained during those protests were injuries to the lower limbs. The result was a wave of amputations that transformed Gaza's hospitals into amputation wards, and Palestinian youth into a population of the deliberately maimed.

Infantino himself demonstrated the depth of FIFA's insensitivity in April 2026, when he attempted to force Palestinian Football Association President Jibril Rajoub to stand alongside Israel Football Association Vice President Basim Sheikh Suliman at FIFA's annual congress in what was framed as a “gesture of peace.” Rajoub refused, telling Infantino: “I cannot shake the hand of someone the Israelis have brought to whitewash their fascism and genocide. We are suffering.” Palestinian FA Vice President Susan Shalabi, present in the room, reinforced the message. Infantino, undeterred by this rejection, has now proceeded with the proposal for the youth match, determined to use children as props in his imagined narrative of reconciliation.

The context renders the proposal obscene. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November 2025 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The International Court of Justice is examining a genocide case brought by South Africa. Nearly 73,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

Yet FIFA proceeds with its proposal to stage a symbolic football match between the perpetrator and the victim, as if a youth fixture could paper over mass killing, the targeting of sports infrastructure, the deliberate maiming of protesters, and what multiple international bodies are investigating as genocide.
